Bi-facial PV installations are no longer an expensive add-on, an aspirational target, or a ‘nice to have’. The economic case for bifacial technology has rapidly improved in recent years, for large PV plant projects in particular, and far from being a trend, bifacial is here to stay.


Indeed, even traditional mono-facial panels can profit from using reflected light to produce additional gains, proving the fundamental value of on-site irradiance measurement, whatever your set-up.


However, reflected light is much harder to model and predict than Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) and Plane of Array (POA) irradiance. The spectral properties of reflected light are different, and for anyone serious about albedo, those properties require concerted research and operational measurement. Understanding albedo, optimising the surroundings and reflective surfaces can, for instance, lead to high-impact, low-cost improvements to overall output and efficiency.


That’s why more and more albedometers are appearing in PV fields around the world. Pyranometers that measure reflected irradiance can be installed at the rear of a PV module in a host of different locations, all helping to ensure a good representation of reflected irradiance. x2 pyranometers, in the classic albedometer configuration on one mount, are an ideal solution for site prospecting and plant monitoring, thanks to the compactness of installation and repeatability of measurements.


EKO Instruments offers a wide range of albedometers based on our industry and class-leading range of ISO 9060:2018 Class A, B, and C pyranometers. The M-80S albedometer, for instance, with low-zero offset, spectrally flat and fast-response; the only fast-response Class A pyranometer by a major manufacturer is especially well-suited to albedo measurements and compliant with the IEC-61724-1 international standard for PV monitoring applications.


Every S-Series pyranometer also includes internal temperature, tilt, roll, and humidity sensors, Level A EMI/EMC surge protection, and our smart 4-channel interface, compatible with 95% of data loggers, DAQ and SCADA systems.


We offer two types of albedo mounts. The ‘MS-Albedo Kit 1’ is compatible with all our thermopile pyranometers, including the MS-80, MS-60, MS-40, and their S-Series counterparts, the MS-80S, MS-60S, and MS-40S. The ‘MS-Albedo Kit 2’ is a larger version of ‘Kit 1’, designed to accommodate the MV-01 compact heater and ventilator optional add-on for uninterrupted measurements in all weather conditions. Due to the lightweight and compact design of the MV-01 ventilation, they can easily be mounted in albedo configuration, together with the pyranometer, without creating too much stress on the structure or shadow on nearby modules; a common issue with larger ventilators.


For locations where size and weight must be kept to a minimum, we also offer the super-compact ML-02 Si-Albedometer, one of the smallest and lightest albedometers around. Perfect for use at PV plants with bifacial modules, hydrology weather stations, and for agricultural research, the ML-02 Si-Albedometer is ISO 9060-2018 Class C, fast response, and comes with a special housing with a bubble level and 70cm mounting rod, making it easy to install for any application.


We’ve also developed an exciting custom-made multi-directional irradiance sensor featuring x6 separate ML-02 pyranometers in a compact enclosure that can independently measure irradiance up, down, North, South, East and West. Our goal is to create a tool ideally suited to better understanding reflected irradiance in complex geometries or dynamic systems such as in BIPV projects or floating PV installations.


Although this is not a standard measurement in PV plants, spectral albedo is another measurement growing in importance for bi-facial PV research due to increasing PV technology and reflective surfaces combinations. With sensors like the MS-711, a unique all-weather spectroradiometer designed to provide the most accurate solar spectral data outdoors, EKO has a solution whatever your need, goal, or application.
